Year 6 to 7 Transition Parent Information Evening
Our Year 6 to 7 Transition Parent Information Evening will take place on Wednesday 5th July 2023, between 5:00pm – 6:00pm. Please arrive at 4:50pm to sign in. The Principal address will start promptly at 5:00pm, followed by a tour of the school. College leaders, Year 7 tutors and SENCo will be available throughout the evening if you have any further queries.

FAQs for Year 6 Parents/Carers
This year, we have selected ‘Running on the Roof of the World’ by Jess Butterworth to be our book of choice for the 2023-2024 Year 6 to 7 Transition project.
This book will be used during the Transition days, during our Summer School and also during the first week of the new term. Every pupil will receive a free copy courtesy of Tudor Grange Samworth Academy. Students will have the opportunity to read as part of a group, discuss the main themes and enjoy the beauty of reading.
‘This beautifully designed book is a richly atmospheric story of friendship, courage and survival. It provides a rare insight into Tibetan culture and raises timely questions about the nature of freedom, without being overtly political. Although there are some distressing moments, these are sensitively handled and the overriding message is one of hope and compassion’.
The college leaders will be visiting or virtually contacting students who are attending their primary schools this term to answer any questions that they might have. If your child is not attending their school provision currently then we will still try to get in touch and the transition section of the website will be the place to check for any updates.

Our transition team have been hard at work behind the scenes and have been in contact with the primary schools. The schools have passed on key information regarding your child and if there is any special educational need that will need supporting in year 7. Mrs Milton leads our SEND department and will be in touch with the primary schools to ensure smooth transition. The transition section of our school website has a video introducing the school and also contains electronic copies of activities in different subject areas that your child can complete over summer. We think these will help your child begin year 7 with confidence so please do encourage them to complete the activities. Every year 7 will also be given a copy of “Running on the Roof of the World” to read over the summer (see above).
Pupils will start on Tuesday 29th August 2023.
Yes, information will be given out to all our new year 7 students on their first day, including their timetable. They will have already met their tutors on the Transition Days.

Summer School
Summer School 2022 was an invaluable experience for our children and our staff. During the first week of the summer holidays, Tudor Grange Samworth Academy opened our doors and welcomed our new year 7s, and some of our new GCSE cohort, back for one week of Summer School. Pupils had the chance to participate in a range of enrichment activities, alongside one hour of English and one hour of Maths work each day. At the end of the week four pupils were selected and won an Amazon Kindle for their hard work in English and Maths throughout the week.
Pupils got to try their hand at archery and had a visit from Zoolab with their exotic animals. The children had the chance to see, hold and stroke a multitude of live animals, including a snake, a tarantula, a giant snail and a stick insect as they were taught about animal classification and food chains. A circus workshop was also provided, with the children getting to try out different circus skills, and a falconry session during which the children had the opportunity to stroke an owl and have a bird of prey fly directly to their hand.
Our students broke pinatas filled with sweets in our Fiesta de Espanol (Spanish Party), cooked some Native American foods in Food Technology and looked at self-care ideas, getting a good night’s sleep and circles of support during their Healthy Minds Workshop.
On the Friday, to celebrate the hard work of all our pupils, they were provided with a “Fun Day”. Pupils painted African masks in the traditional style, made bookmarks and planted runner beans in pots to take home and grow over the summer. The children also had the chance to enjoy an “Inflatable Extravaganza Bonanza” on the field, with bouncy castles, sumo suits, assault courses, bungee runs, slides, a beat the buzzer and a rodeo bull set up. It gave all our pupils the opportunity to access the curriculum a week early. It allowed our year 7s time to settle into secondary school without the pressures of a full building. It gave staff the chance to get to know the children that were transitioning into the school, and to begin to build positive relationships with them based on trust and mutual respect, alongside ensuring all students were ready for the beginning of term.
