Welcome to Year 5’s year group page. This page contains general information to support parents/carers of children in Year 5. We also have class pages on Class Dojo, a secure website which can only be accessed by parents/carers of children in Year 5 at TGSA. This is where we will upload photographs and updates of what is going on in our classes. You can also use Class Dojo to get in touch with us and share the work that you child is doing at home.
On a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, year 5 classes take it in turns to visit the reception classes and read with them. The younger children pick the book they would like to read and the year 5s read to them. This week has been slightly different as we have decorated question cards to help us ask questions about the book. The children have loved spending time with the younger children.
In art this week, we have been learning about the British artist Rachel Ducker. She is well-known for her sculpting work, using wire. We have created our own designs inspired by Rachel, practicing our manipulation of a new material (jewellery wire) using bending, twisting and wrapping.
Year 5 have bought their learning about Space to an end by creating their own orreries. We made our planets from papier-mâché and attached them to our paper plate in the order of their distance away from the sun. Some fabulous teamwork was witnessed and great fun had by all.
This week has been a busy one in year 5. One of the highlights has been exploring what happens to our shadows throughout the day as part of our Space science topic. We chalked out our shadows and then returned to them throughout the day to see what happened. We observed that as the day went on, our shadows got smaller. We also realised there was a relationship between the length of our shadows and where the sun was positioned in the sky; the higher the sun, the shorter the shadow. Well done year 5- great scientific enquiry!
