Year 7

After the Christmas break you will be composing your own music in music lessons. To help please listen to the following music compositions and answer the following questions:

What emotion/atmosphere does this music create? How does it achieve this?

You will need to use the following key terms in your answer

Pitch, Tempo, Dynamics, Rhythm, Instrumentation, Structure, Harmony and Texture.

All answer should be either written up neatly or typed ready for the first lesson back as we will be discussing these as a class.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G4NKzmfC-Q (Vltava by Smetana)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmk5frp6-3Q (Mars by Gustav Holst)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j2JRcC6wBs (Lux Arumque by Eric Whitacre)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXifpcE7ewU

Create a spider diagram of what you would like to feature in your song, i.e. instruments, male or female vocalist or both, ideas for lyrics, chord structure.

Year 9

Task 1

Continue to rehearse your ensemble parts to prepare for full band rehearsals after the Christmas break.

Task 2

Work through your grade 1 music theory book these will be submitted for marking on the first day back. All of this knowledge will underpin your music notation reading (performance), understanding basic symbols for composition and being able to dictate music in written exam, in short very useful and important. Please collect books from Mrs Haynes if you do not already have one.

Year 10

Task 1

Listen to the music of Etta James, Nina Simone, BBKing, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Miles Davis and create a listening factfile for each for at least one of their songs. Comment on the instrumentation, tonality, instrumental techniques (e.g. muted, improvisation, wah wah, brush sticks, scat singing etc.) for each piece you listen to along with any other interesting observations. It is important to do this task without first researching the songs (No Google!) to see what you are able to pick out through your own listening. You will not have Google in your listening exam!

Task 2

What are the main musical features that distinguish Jazz and the Blues from any other musical genre

You can either type up your work or handwrite in your books. Happy listening.

Year 11

Task 1

Compile a spider diagram each for both set works of all of the musical features included in Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Since You’ve Been Gone. You should include key signature, time signature, date of composition, composer, instrumentation, performance directions (tempo) etc. This will go a long way in preparing for your set work questions on the written examination. Revise this sheet and make sure you are able to remember these key facts about both set works.

Task 2

If you have not yet completed your performance assessment please continue to practice over the Christmas break, as this will need to be recorded within the first fortnight back in January.

Task 3

Revise the key terms on the vocabulary matts and make sure you are able to use them appropriately in response to what your hear.
